Gas Safety
Whether you use gas for cooking, heating, or hot water heating, it is important to know what to do in the event you smell gas inside your home:
Important: If you can’t stop the gas leak by turning off the gas appliance(s) or the gas supply, contact Fire and Emergency on 111.
- If safe to do so, turn off all gas appliances immediately.
- If you have bottled gas supply, turn these off by screwing the valves clockwise.
- If you are on piped gas, turn the valve off at the meter.
- Open doors and windows to ventilate the area.
- Don’t light anything. Keep flames and cigarettes out of the affected room and away from the area.
- Never use a match or flame to check for a leak.
- Leave all electrical appliances or switches as they are. A flick on or off can cause a spark.
- Don’t use a mobile phone in the area.
- Go outside to a safe place away from the building.
